Recently a project was completed that is so large, it is being considered for the Guinness Book of World Records (see picture above). At three thousand and eighty square feet, the mosaic is a massive replica of the Piri Reis map, a world map created in the 16th century by an Ottoman admiral of the same name. Three and a half million 3/8” x 3/8” stone chips where used to recreate the map. The Piri Reis map is famous for the detail it shows of the continents, even Antarctica is represented. Besides the impressive geographical elements, the map has a whimsical quality because of the depictions of the different country’s inhabitants. African animals, Caribbean parrots, fishermen and ships filled with sailors bring life to the map. Twenty five mosaic artists spent three months immortalizing the map and its residents in stone.
