Built in 1931, 165 Capitol Avenue is home to the State of Connecticut’s Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, and staff offices. Award-winning architecture and interior design firm Amenta Emma Architects was tasked with restoring the state office building’s historically significant features, while updating the aesthetic to reflect a more contemporary workplace.

165 Capitol Ave Lobby

Looking to create a statement in the highest traffic area of the building, Amenta decided to incorporate custom cut natural stone tile in the lobby to reflected both the scale and monumentality of government.

White Marble Quarry

AKDO hosted Amenta at a white marble quarry in Carrara, Italy for the material and quality control inspections, ensuring the product met their expectations. The firm was able to choose the stone with the exact movement and tonality they were seeking.

Lobby Wall Detail

The specified stone was then processed into large format tile with three-dimensional triangular facets for an arresting and stately look. Due to the complexity of the design and scale of the lobby, there were hundreds of different tile sizes used to create the final effect.
